My House: The Artifacts
I have been working on a series of drawings of the superficial objects I own; those objects that so often define our status, culture, aesthetics, and worth. In a consumerist society, we are often judged by our worldly possessions. We find self-worth through our collections of artifacts, dishes, clothing, furniture, shoes, cars, and decorative objects. By creating drawings of these valuables, I feel that I can record the artifacts of my existence, establishing my importance in the world. I know this superficial cataloging is unnecessary to prove my existence, but it is the ritual act of drawing these objects of desire that interests me most. To draw, document and record my life by hand and through line, over time makes these renderings more precious and important than the real objects themselves could ever be. This work called “My House: the Artifacts” is an ongoing installation piece that changes and grows each time it is exhibited. Examples are pictured here.
