Look Around. Take a careful look at your surroundings and you will see that drawings are all around us. In fact, they are so much a part of our everyday experience that we often overlook them. We see drawings in advertising, textile design, and the stitched lines on the back pockets of our jeans. Drawings can be found in car manuals, on skin, in children’s books, and in online comics. Each of us has at some time in our lives created a drawing. At the beach, you may have drawn pictures in the sand. If you have ever played “connect the dots,” then you’ve created a drawing. In fact, handwriting is often considered a form of drawing, and your signature is a unique calligraphic mark that is specific to you alone.

This book provides an introduction to the technical aspects of representational drawing. Whether you have little to no experience with drawing, or have been drawing all of your life, this text is structured so that every student will leave with a set of analytic drawing tools, which will enable them to render almost any form realistically.

In 2010 I was commissioned to design and construct a site-specific installation for SicolaMartin, an advertising agency in Austin, TX. This work, Interior Wave, was created from a simple line drawing, a series of hand drawn arcs repeated, touching, overlapping and intertwining. The physical work, although three dimensional in its completion, is simply a line drawing, cut out, bent and affixed to the wall. It is an abstraction of course, not simply suggesting a wave or a nest, but embodying the illusion of movement in suspension.Previous&nbsp;/&nbsp;Next image&nbsp;(1 of 6)<img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/15493/436248/Sicola Martin Installation.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="376" align="left" /> <img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/15493/436248/1 sicola wall sm.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" align="left" /> <img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/15493/436248/2 sicola wall sm.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" align="left" /> <img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/15493/436248/3 sicola wall sm.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" align="left" /> <img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/15493/436248/4 sicola wall sm.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" align="left" /> <img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/15493/436248/5 sicola wall sm.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" align="left" />

This 10'x10' charcoal wall drawing was created for an exhibition at Northern Kentucky University in 2007. "Three Generations" refers to the three generations of women in my family including myself, my mother and my mother's mother. The piece is a stack of chairs that my grandmother, mother and I owned, all drawn from memory.Previous&nbsp;/&nbsp;Next image&nbsp;(1 of 2)<img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/15493/205562/threegenerations.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="580" align="left" /> <img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/15493/205562/threegen.2.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="641" align="left" />

Interested in testing the conventions of drawing, I work in and around academic traditions of representation. I use marker as my drawing medium so I cannot correct the mistakes of the hand. Each imperfection, in search of perfection, inspires me to continue in the task of collecting data and representing my own reality. In this work, I spent a 4 month period collecting the portraits of family and friends, self-portraits, and copies of master drawings. The resulting 11'x11' display of the collection was shown at the University of Cinncinnati Gallery in 2006.
